This article deals with the fjord name Hafrsfjord and other place-names from the Hafrsfjord area in northern Jæren (Southwest-
Norway). The author discusses the etymology and the semantics of the fjord name and related toponyms, as well as the background
and function of other place-names from this area, e.g., toponyms linked to harbours and old defence systems. Some unique and
ancient settlement names from northern Jæren are discussed, e.g., Tjora, Viste, Madla and Hinna. It is argued that local placenames
– both macro- and microtoponyms – are important sources of information about the history and culture of the area, including
the local language.
