Abstract
Summary
The purpose of this assignment has been to investigate whether social media is a tool for use in the crisis communication or whether it is an uncontrollable channel for operators on the Norwegian continental shelf. To find answers to that, I designed the question “To what extent operators on the Norwegian continental shelf use social media in their crisis communication?”
A Qualitative method has been chosen for this assignment. More specifically, semi-structured interview was conducted of eight key people in five selected operating companies in Norway.
Main findings in the thesis;
• All companies feel that the speed of crisis communication has increased due to the development of social media.
• All companies experience a dilemma that information in a crisis should be released early, while at the same time the information must be verified and correct.
• Only two of five companies have described social media in the crisis communication plan, or in the emergency preparedness plan.
• The informants from companies A and E agree that if they had had more resources in the communication department, as well as “digital enthusiasts”, they would have had a different approach to social media than they have today.
