Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is that it should, through a study of three hotels, provide answers to the problem; how was Facebook used as a marketing channel before versus through Covid-19. The thesis will be based on three different hotels in the Stavanger region: Thon Hotel Stavanger, Scandic Stavanger City, and Clarion Hotel Energy. Using these, the thesis will provide answers to whether, and possibly how, marketing has changed through the marketing channel; Facebook before and through Covid-19. The thesis is based from January 2018 until December 2021.The problem will be prepared using two research questions: Was Facebook used more as a marketing channel before Covid-19 versus through Covid-19? Has Covid-19 had a positive or negative effect on the way hotels use Facebook as a marketing channel? By answering these research questions, the study will help to provide increased knowledge about Facebook as a marketing channel in a possible crisis such as Covid-19.The theory chapter of the thesis is built around the problem. Here you will get an insight into different definitions, concepts, and research related to marketing, social media, customer relations, and messaging strategy. The research used in the thesis is obtained by means of content analysis. Here, data is collected which is further analyzed. It is also looked at in various academic articles. In the methods chapter, the thesis tests various hypothesis questions that will help to provide a further understanding of the research questions.By looking at results based on likes, comments, and shares established in tables and graphs, the study finally concludes that both format and messaging strategy help to influence the effect of marketing through the marketing channel Facebook. One sees through discussion how important it is to develop and maintain good customer relations, especially in crises such as Covid-19. There is a clear difference before Covid-19 and through based on the obvious decrease in the effectiveness of Facebook posts.
