Sammenheng mellom possession og kampresultater i fotball.

Abstract

Hensikten med denne masteroppgaven var å undersøke om det foreligger en sammenheng mellom ballpossession og kampresultatene for lag i den norske Eliteserien, og dette ble undersøkt ved å se om possessionverdiene endret seg signifikant i kampene som endte med seier, uavgjort og tap. Samtlige kamper (N=450) til 15 lag som endte på ulike tabellplasseringer (2. plass, 7. plass og 13. plass) i Eliteserien i sesongene 2016-2020 ble analysert. Rådata ble hentet ut for variablene ballpossession (totalt, hjemme og borte, første og andre omgang), totalt antall skudd, skudd på mål og pasninger ble innsamlet i tillegg til informasjon om tabellplassering, mål scoret, mål innsluppet og resultater (seier, uavgjort, tap) fra nettsiden SofaScore. SofaScore bruker sportsanalyseselskapet Opta Sport for innsamling av data. En en-veis ANOVA (variansanalyse) ble tatt i bruk som test i det statistiske dataprogrammet SPSS for å undersøke om det fantes signifikante forskjeller i possessionverdiene i kampene som endte med seier, uavgjort eller tap. Resultatene viser ingen signifikant forskjell i possessionverdiene til lagene i Eliteserien i sammenheng med resultatene deres (seier, uavgjort, tap), men resultatene viser derimot at lagene som endte på 2. plass og 7. plass hadde signifikant høyere ballpossessionverdier i kampene sine sammenlignet med lagene som endte på 13. plass. Lagene hadde signifikant høyere antall totale skudd og skudd på mål per kamp i kampene de vinner, sammenlignet med i kampene de spiller uavgjort eller taper. Det ble ikke funnet noen signifikant forskjell i antall pasninger per kamp for lagene når de vant, spilte uavgjort eller tapte. Resultatene viser også at lagene i gjennomsnitt hadde høyere possessionverdier på hjemmebane sammenlignet med på bortebane, og at possessionverdiene synker i andreomgangene sammenlignet med førsteomgangene. Denne masteroppgaven konkluderer med at det ikke er en sammenheng mellom ballpossession og kampresultater for lag i Eliteserien, da det ikke ble funnet signifikante forskjeller i possessionverdiene i kampene som endte med seier, uavgjort og tap.

The aim of this master thesis was to examine if there is a correlation between possession and match outcomes for teams in the Norwegian Eliteserien, and this was done by examining if the possession values significantly changed in relation to results in matches where the teams won, drew or lost. All matches (N=450) for 15 teams in the Norwegian Eliteserien with different table rankings (2nd place, 7th place and 13th place) in Eliteserien in the seasons between 2016-2020 were analyzed. Raw data for the variables ballpossession (total possession, possession home and away, first half and second half), totalt amount of shots per game, shots on target per game and passes. Information regarding the teams’ table rankings, goals for, goals against and results (victory, draw, loss) were also retrieved. All the retrieved data were gathered from the official website of SofaScore, who are clients of the sport analytic company Opta Sports which provides them with data. A one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance) were used as statistic test in the statistical computer program SPSS to detect significant differences in possession values for when the teams won, drew or lost. Results show no significant differences in possession values for the teams in relation to their results (win, draw, loss), but the results show that the teams with the table rankings 2nd and 7th had significant higher possession values than the teams with the table ranking 13th. The results also show that the teams had significant higher total shots and shots on target in the games they won, compared to the games which they drew or lost. No significant differences were found in the amount of passes for the teams when they won, drew or lost. Results also show that the teams had higher average possession in home games compared to away games, and that the average possession decreased from the first half to the second half in their games. This master thesis concludes that there is no correlation between ballpossession and match outcomes for the teams in Eliteserien, as the results show no significant differences in possession in the games where the teams won, drew or lost.
