Exploring Leadership Approaches: Fostering Positive Organizational Culture Within the Norwegian Art and Culture Sector
Abstract
This master thesis delves into the realm of leadership and organizational culture within theNorwegian art and culture sector, aiming to answer two fundamental questions: Whatconstitutes a desired organizational culture within this sector, and how do established leadersleverage their positions to foster and maintain such a culture? Drawing from personalexperiences and observations within the sector, the research explores the diversity oforganizational cultures and leadership styles, influenced by factors such as societal impact,economic constraints, and governmental policies. The methodology section outlines aconstructivist/interpretive approach, utilizing qualitative research methods such as in-depthinterviews and thematic analysis to capture leaders' perspectives.The findings underscore the significance of a positive organizational culture in shapingvisitor experiences and fostering inclusivity, professionalism, openness, flexibility, andcourage within the sector. Leaders prioritize psychological safety and open communication toprevent conflicts and sustain a unified work environment, fostering an atmosphere whereteam members feel valued and free to express themselves. Moreover, successful leadershipstrategies extend beyond financial gains, emphasizing societal impact, cultural enrichment,and collaboration with external stakeholders.The study highlights the importance of aligning organizational values with individualmotivations and skills to maintain the desired culture. Integrating stakeholder analysisprocedures could enhance the effectiveness of establishing valuable networks with externalpartners which would benefit the organizations.In summary, effective leadership within the Norwegian art and culture sector requiresnavigating a unique landscape defined by idealistic goals, flat structures, political dynamics,economic constraints, and reliance on volunteers. Through a holistic approach encompassinginclusive leadership, psychological safety, and strategic networking, organizations within thissector can foster cultures that inspire creativity, innovation, and societal impact.
