The purpose of this assignment is to investigate if the experience of the internal communication during the Covid-19-pandemic have had an impact on employee’s motivation. Communication and motivation are topics that are highly relevant considering the time we are in, especially for the working life. We hope this assignment can participate in putting a greater focus on the importance of internal crisis communication and its role towards the employees in organizations. Crisis communication is about collecting, treating and convey information to be able to handle a crisis (Coombs, 2010). In an organization there can at any point arise different types of crises that can be both hard to handle for leaders, but also hard to deal with for the employees. Open and good two-way communication can minimize or better deal with crises, as well as impact the employee’s motivation in uncertain times. We have, through qualitative approach, based our research on employees with different roles in tourism organizations. Our interest lay in interviewing employees that have been or still are laid off, but also have been working through the pandemic. Our goal was to see if there are a difference in the employee’s experience of the communication and if their roles were a factor in this. Four interviews were conducted where we asked questions towards their experience of the communication during the Covid-19-pandemic and their motivation during the period. We have used theories on communication, internal communication, Job-Demand Resource model, Internal Corporate Communication model, crisis communication and organizational to analyze and answer the problem of the assignment. Organizational culture impacts employees experience of the communication and Internal Corporate Communication model supports the motivation. This provides our theoretical base for the assignment because of its contribution to an increased understanding for our problem formulation.
