Kjønnsforskjeller i arbeidslivet, skapt av kjønnsnormer eller individuelle valg?

Abstract

Hva har samfunnets kjønnsnormer å si for kjønnsforskjeller i arbeidslivet? For oppgaven har jeg valgt en problemstilling som kombinerer individ og samfunn. Jeg har undersøkt ulike områder av kjønnsforskjeller i arbeidslivet igjennom andres teorier og konklusjoner. Jeg har drøftet hvorvidt man kan skylde kjønnsforskjeller på individuelle valg eller ikke. Problemstillingen ble drøftet i stor grad ut fra hvordan historiske kjønnsnormer påvirker institusjoner, arbeidsliv og dagligliv i det norske samfunnet. Mitt hovedmål var ikke å komme fram til en løsning på problemstillingen, men heller å kunne forstå et samfunnsproblem ut fra sosiologisk tenkning. Konklusjonen min ble da at kjønnsforskjeller i arbeidslivet ser ut til å være styrt av både individuelle valg og samfunnets kjønnsnormer. I hvor stor grad de forskjellene er skapt av det ene eller det andre er fortsatt uvisst. Individuelle valg kan påvirke strukturerte kjønnsnormer, og motsatt. Dette vil kunne skape forvirringer om hva som er rett eller galt, noe som vil være opp til den enkelte å måtte tolke selv.

How does society`s gender norms affect the gender differences in working life? For the thesis, I have chosen a issue that combines humans and society. I have investigated different areas of gender differences in working life through other people`s theories and conclusions. I have discussed whether one can blame gender differences on individual schices or not. The issue was discussed largely on the basis of how historical gender norms affect institutions, working life and daily life in the Norwegian society. My main goal was not to come to a solution to my issue, but rather to be able to understand a societal problem based on sociological thinking. My conclusion was that gender differences in working life seem to be influenced by both individual choices and society`s gender norms. The extent to which those differences are created by one or the other is still uncertian. Individual choices can affect structures gender norms, and vice versa. This can create confusion about what is right or wrong, which will be up to the individual to have to interpret themselves.
