This dissertation examines how history and memories are used in the Norwegian immigration debate, based on theories from within the field of memory studies and uses of history. The thesis’ main research question is: “How do different actors use history and memory in texts about immigration and immigrants, published in Norwegian newspapers in the years 2015-2018?”. In addition to this main question are three other research questions which further deals with the possible patterns that are visible in regards to the use of historical references, how the analysis’ two parts can be compared to each other and what possible role the societal context plays in this, and lastly, why the authors use history and memories in their texts. To answer the aforementioned research question of this thesis, the data material has been analyzed by performing a qualitative content analysis as described by Hsiu-Fang Hsieh and Sarah E. Shannon. The material consists of a number of texts taken from Norwegian newspapers – both local and national – and the texts are written by both public and private individuals. The analysis is based on the interpretation of the content of the various texts and applies theories of historical analogies and their effects and use, and the various forms of memory and what significance they may have. The findings of the analysis shows how collective memories regarding Norway during World War II and the Balkan-crisis play a central role in the debate and its use of history. The analysis also points to several findings associated to the use of local analogies, and that this played a major role in which memories were used. In addition to this, it was apparent that individual memories from a persons’ time as a refugee in or to Norway, is a factor that plays a significant role in the debate. Last but not least, the analysis has made it clear to what extent history and memories are involved in helping people orient themselves in society and shape their opinions, and also how the use of history is seen as an opportunity to influence the future. The dissertation will hopefully also be able to shed light on which memories and historical references we as a society highly value in order to orient ourselves in an unknown time, or in countering the attitudes and rhetoric of the immigration debate.
