The motive for this master's thesis is to investigate how participants in a BDSM culture express their sexuality and communicate with other participants using their profile pictures in a special social medium. In the relevant social media, arrangements are made for people who identify with the umbrella term BDSM to design their own profile and represent their sexuality in a digital landscape and interact with other like-minded people. The participants show their affinity for the BDSM culture by means of representation and interaction by virtue of various semiotic resources, but in this thesis only the profile picture is explored as a meaningful resource. Social semiotics as a theoretical framework creates a gateway to analyze the profile pictures using the ideational, interpersonal and textual meta-function as well as explore the BDSM discourse using the very special register that characterizes the subculture.
