Forsking visar at retningslinjene ikkje vert tilstrekkeleg implementert.
The aim of this study was to get more knowledge about secondary school pupils’ health challenges, and the importance of the school and the school health services on pupils' health. This may contribute to the development of an interdisciplinary school health service that is adapted to the pupils’ and the school's needs. The background for the study is a political priority to school health services and new guidelines for a health promotion and interdisciplinary school health service. Researches shows that the guidelines have not been adequately implemented. Public health and life skills are central in the new curriculum for the schools. This invites to collaboration. Pupils are reporting more physical and mental problems now than before, and more absence is registered. More knowledge concerning what affects teenagers’ health is needed. The method is designed as a qualitative study with focus group interviews of 8th and 10th grade pupils, teachers and school management. The material is analysed using content analysis inspired by Graneheim and Lundman. The results are seen in the light of self-determination theory and others. The main finding is that pupils’ health challenges are complex, the pupils find the school health services unavailable, there is a lack of health competence in the school and the school can be both health promoting and -inhibiting. The study concludes that the school is in need for collaboration and co-creation with the school health service to make the school a more health-promoting arena, by for example strengthening pupils’ autonomy, competence and relatedness.
