This research project examines the differences and similarities in the learning outcome of students working with different historical sources. The historical sources used in this research project are one episode of the TV-series Vikings and written primary sources. The students have been through the same lesson plan, where the only difference is the historical sources which they have worked with. I have chosen three categories which I shall analyze the learning outcome of the students. These are historical contextualization, historical consciousness, and critical thinking. These terms are all a part of the new curriculum. In addition, I will also analyze the student’s identification with the Vikings. To be able to answer my research question I have included a theoretical framework which contains the work of scholars such as Reisman and Wineburg. Their work with critical thinking is central in this master thesis theoretical framework. In addition, scholars such as Marcus, Barton and Levstik are also included to discuss and analyze the learning outcomes of the students involved in this research project. This research project has been carried out in a Norwegian upper secondary school. I have chosen to use a qualitative content analysis to analyze the data that I have gathered. The data in this research project contains of two datasets. First, the students answered some written, individual tasks, then they participated in group interviews. The results shows that there are both differences and similarities in the learning outcome of the students. The class which worked with the episode of Vikings showed a better and more detailed use of historical contextualization than the students in the other class. Both classes showed outcome in terms of critical thinking, but there were more students in the class who worked with written primary sources that showed critical thinking. There are also differences in how the classes practiced critical thinking. Students who worked with written primary sources were able to connect the past to the present better than the class who worked with Vikings. Therefore, they showed more historical consciousness than their counterpart. The research project also shows that the class that watched Vikings have a far more distanced relationship with the Vikings than the other class.
