dc.description.abstract80 % of the sensory impressions are perceived through the vision. Thereby, individuals with visual impairment can face difficulties to orientate without this essential sense. Therefore, public spaces must be universally designed to ensure the accessibility of them. However, since visually impaired individuals have various visual conditions, a universally designed public space is a complex task. The thesis strives to explore the necessities visually impaired people seek in public spaces. The research question that has been studied is “How can public spaces become more accessible for visually impaired people?” To answer this, it is important to assess the perception and experience of visually impaired individuals. Thereby, the author conducted seven in-depth interviews. Additionally, to state the situation of existing public spaces, the city centers of Stavanger and Sandnes were analyzed to reveal the measures in place. The thesis concludes with a set of urban design recommendations. Moreover, the study gives suggestions for other areas in the planning process in need of assessment to properly ensure accessibility for visually impaired people.
