Sammendrag
This master’s thesis examines the factors that affect work cyclists in Nord-Jæren, focusing on motivation, obstacles, advantages, and disadvantages experienced by cyclists. The research question is “Which factors motivate and prevent cycling to work in Nord-Jæren and what advantages and disadvantages do cyclists experience?”. The thesis aims to identify perceived benefits and what motivates today's cyclists, so that more people can be inspired to cycle, thereby contributing to reaching the zero-growth target. At the same time, it is important to identify barriers and disadvantages of cycling to work to address them effectively. The study uses a triangulation method that includes a literature review, a quantitative survey with 1602 respondents conducted by Innsikt, and qualitative interviews with 8 different cyclists. This approach gives a comprehensive picture of the cycling habits in Nord-Jæren, while at the same time giving a deeper insight into the individual experiences of the cyclists. The result shows that cyclists see health, the freedom they feel when cycling, avoiding queues, and saving money as important motivators. Access to good and coherent cycling infrastructure is also an important factor. The perceived benefits include better time management and the enjoyment of fresh air. The weather, especially the winter season, posed an obstacle for cyclists but drying rooms and changing rooms helped. Increased distance also posed an obstacle, but this varies individually and can be reduced with good and efficient infrastructure and electric bicycles.
