Background In Norway, there are an average of 9,000 hip fractures per year, where most patients are elderly and frail. Among hip fracture patients, 30-60% develop delirium, with 20% of cases occurring postoperatively. The condition is often not identified in time, which can lead to the patient having a more complicated course of the disease. Nurses are in a central position to identify and prevent the condition. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on how a nurse in the orthopedic department can contribute to the identification and prevention of postoperative delirium in elderly patients admitted with hip fracture. The problem is therefore: "How can a nurse in the orthopedic department identify and prevent delirium postoperatively in elderly patients admitted with hip fracture". Method An integrative literature review has been used where five research articles have been analyzed. The results from the articles, relevant litterature as well as own reflections and experiences form the basis for the answer. Results The results show that there is a lack of focus on the identification of delirium, and that more knowledge is required about the condition among nurses in orthopedic wards. Lack of routines for the use of systematic portocols is something that emerges in several of the study results. Maintaining the patient's basic needs proves to be the most important preventive measure. Keywords: Nursing, delirium, elderly, postoperative, identification, prevention, mapping tools, basic nursing care and knowledge.
