Foreldres opplevelse av mottak og innledning av generell anestesi til barn

Abstract

Sammendrag Bakgrunn: I praksis har vi erfart at arbeid med foreldre og barn kan være krevende for anestesipersonellet. Erfaring fra praksis gjorde at vi satt igjen med tanker om hvordan anestesiforløpet opplevdes for foreldre.

Hensikt: Hensikten med studiet var å belyse hva foreldre opplevde som viktig når barnet deres legges i generell anestesi.

Mål: Vi ønsket å få en bredere forståelse av hva foreldre syntes var viktig i møte med anestesipersonell når barnet ble lagt i generell anestesi. Vi håper at våre funn kan inngå som en del av forbedringsarbeidet i anestesiavdelingen i forbindelse med mottak og innledning av generell anestesi til barn.

Metode: Det ble utført 12 individuelle intervju med semistrukturert intervjuguide. Dataene ble analysert ved Graneheim og Lundmans kvalitative innholdsanalyse.

Resultat: Vi fant at foreldre har behov for å bli trygget i foreldrerollen. De understreket betydningen av at barnet ble ivaretatt av anestesipersonell. Foreldre vektla måten anestesipersonellet brukte god tid, og ikke-medikamentelle metoder som avledning og lek. Foreldre hadde behov for individuelt tilpasset informasjon, både før innleggelse og underveis i anestesiforløpet. Foreldre ga uttrykk for at informasjonen som ble gitt av anestesipersonell til barnet, burde tilpasses utviklingsnivå og alder.

Konklusjon: Det er viktig at vi som anestesisykepleiere og teamet for øvrig gir klar og tydelig informasjon under anestesiforløpet og identifiserer de individuelle behovene hos foreldre og barn. I møte med foreldre må vi etterstrebe og skape trygghet for dem i foreldrerollen ved å møte dem med respekt, gi støtte og inkludere dem som en ressurs i teamet – samtidig som vi skal trygge barnet.

Abstract Background: Through practical experience, we assessed that working with parents and children can be demanding for anaesthesia staff, and left us with reflections regarding how the anaesthesia process was experienced by parents.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to shed light on what parents experienced as important in relation to when their child is placed under general anaesthesia.

Aim: We wanted to gain a broader understanding of what parents thought was important in meeting with anaesthesia staff when their child was placed in general anaesthesia. We hope our findings can be implemented to improve the processes in the anaesthesia department when receiving and initiating general anaesthesia on children.

Method: Twelve individual interviews were conducted with a semi-structured interview guide. The data was analysed by Graneheim and Lundman's qualitative content analysis.

Result: We found that parents have a need to be assured in their role as a parent. They emphasised the importance of anaesthesia staff being the ones looking after their child. Parents pointed out the significance of anaesthesia staff spending larger periods of time and non-drug related methods for diverting and playing with the children. Parents required individually tailored information, both before admission and during the course of anaesthesia. Parents expressed that the information provided by anaesthesia personnel to the child should be adapted in accordance to level of development and age.

Conclusion: It is important that as anaesthesia nurses we, in combinations with the rest of the team, provide clear and specific information during the anaesthesia process, whilst simultaneously identifying the individual needs of the parents and children. When meeting the parents, we must strive to create security for them in their role as parents by meeting them with respect, providing support and including them as a resource in the team, whilst simultaneously securing the child
