The train station in Stavanger City Center created foundation for the station, when it was built about 150 years ago. Through the last decade, our human needs and our means of transportation have changed to become more efficient and sustainable. Change of human behavior in the urban space and the continuing expansion of cities has included natural transformation of previous industrial areas, into more environmental friendly and sustainable choices, regarding the citizens. Stavanger station has through rich history with multiple transformations, adapted to the surroundings. The history of the area has created a complex picture consisting of the identity of the station, which builds upon visual recognition and the cultural consistency of the city. The stations identity and history is affected by motorized vehicles and transport with direct connection to the functionality of the area. The location and role of Stavanger station and Byterminalen is directly connected to their functionality in Stavanger. The whole area consists of a monofunctional area which to its extent is compatible with movement of a large amount of people. Functionality and external limits make the transformation of the station, a complex and challenging task. The external boundaries are shown to be less flexible, which are either restricted by law through government or municipal regulation due to area. However, functionality of the station in present society plays a critical role in the development of sustainable and livable cities. Development of functionality will contribute to build attractive urban spaces in the center of Stavanger, that will build upon regional and local evolution. Stavanger as a regional center is an important drive for development within the region, as through the means of transportation and human movement. This thesis includes an amount of thoroughly and objective analyzes, that reveal how Stavanger station can be transformed into a multifunctional area. Where through the means of transportation, security and reliable accommodation will be upheld and kept in a high and inclusive level. Spatial analysis and SWOT-analysis have highlighted the potential possibilities of opportunity and threats, that can be associated with transformation of the area. There is a huge potential for creation of a new livable, environmental-friendly and sustainable space, where it’s facilitated through multi-functionality by the means of collective transport. The transformation is expected to be the most complex part of work, where the conceptual and theoretical work is based on daily theory as means of understanding. Functionality of the train station and Byterminalen are both necessary together with future needs where external actors create a bigger challenge with complex factors, that must be considered. The possibility study is based on user needs and existing plans from the municipality plan of Stavanger City Center. There is desire for further development of the station as a proficient, livable and attractive area. The main purpose of the thesis is to present a robust basis for further development of Stavanger station with belonging area. In a way to create sustainable areas with qualitative accommodation (that fulfills the need of stimulation and contact with other people), where everybody in any extent can feel safe and included on the station. A partial transformation is a robust tool through the whole process of solving existing problems. On behalf of this information, the main research question was formed. How to attain a good degree of safety and stay at any time, as well as ensure universal design in Stavanger station, and how will a partial transformation contribute to realizing these goals? To deliver a credible result for the partial transformation, it is necessary to perform a theoretical feasibility study. This includes a lot of analysis of different themes that consist of empirical, qualitative and quantitative research. The analysis is supported by methodology, as means of showing the effect of the partial transformation. The feasibility study has shown the areas weaknesses regarding traffic and traffic conditions, weather conditions and many critical factors, tied to the stay and movement of pedestrians and cyclists in the area. Results of the analysis will be guiding further work, where new opportunities are used to reduce today’s weaknesses. Based on these observations, there is created a concept about how the area should be formed, to create good opportunity to stay, that are accessible for everyone and safe at any given time. The concept of the transformation of the station implies functionality of the area in a bigger urban scale. Pedestrians and cyclists are to be prioritized by removing the ability for private motorized vehicles. The shown solution will, by known environmental, sustainable and technical solutions show the creation of a robust and livable area. Where solutions are to be put side by side with adapted version of the station, in a more modern city where sustainability plays the main role.
