During the last decades several studies of underground tunnels under seismic loads have been conducted. Classically, earthquakes have been associated with active plate boundaries and adjacent areas; however, seismic activity and the driving mechanisms in continental interiors are not yet fully understood. Large intraplate earthquakes in Norway and around the world may have the potential to cause extensive damage and should not be neglected. This study aims to compile known information about how seismicity may affect underground tunnels with focus on the southwestern region of Norway and in particular the Rogfast tunnel area. Historical seismic data is compiled with known structural elements in a GIS environment to map lineaments. One lineament was found to have two historical minor seismic events crossing near perpendicular to the tunnel with the depth of the hypocenter approximately fifteen kilometers deep. Four lineaments offshore Rogaland seem to have a cluster of earthquakes. The occurrence of earthquakes in Norway shows an increase in events from around 1975 to present day, hence rapidly increasing around 1990. Studied earthquakes show a clustering pattern even though some evidence shows scattered events. Based on known studies the earthquake outcome to the Rogfast tunnel depends on several factors due to damage mechanisms are tunnel burial depth, structural integrity of the surrounding rock, and epicentral distance.
