“(1) actors who have the capabilities and values to self-organize; (2) commons wherethe actors accumulate and share resources; and (3) protocols, processes, andinfrastructures that enable multi-actor collaboration.”, (Fjeldstad et al., 2012, s. 734)

Technology and digitization are constantly bringing new user improvements in the form ofinterfaces, more secure solutions and innovative services that improve information access andresource sharing. Organizations are in a digital transformation where actors share resources, are more self-organized and in direct contact across the organization. We study thisemergence through actor-oriented theory and the architectural scheme composed of threemain elements (Fjeldstad et al., 2012, s. 734):
“(1) actors who have the capabilities and values to self-organize; (2) commons wherethe actors accumulate and share resources; and (3) protocols, processes, andinfrastructures that enable multi-actor collaboration.”
The elements are applied as lenses to study digital organization, -transformation and largescaleagile organizations in relation to actor-oriented organizational design drivers. Weexamine mechanisms that contributes to control and coordination performed in actor-orientedorganizations versus hierarchical organization.
Our study shows that digital organizational transformation and large-scale agile methodologydrive empowerment of actors, resulting in more autonomous and self-organized actors acrossthe organization. Actor-oriented organizations uses agile framework as basis to customizedigital platforms and adapt digital services as mechanisms that contribute to solve control andcoordination challenges in large scale.
Findings are based on 6 triangulated in-depth interviews with additional information, conducted as an exploratory multi-case study by 2 international software companies..
