Building a Continuing Care Community in Shanghai

Abstract

Shanghai, the economic center of China, is facing the challenge of severe aging. With the increasing proportion of the elderly population and the lack of pension system, retirement community has become a favored choice for the elderly. However, due to the lack of precedent and the special social situation in China, the establishment of the truly retirement community is still in the exploratory stage.

In such a social context, the research question of this thesis is:

How to build a Continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Shanghai?

In order to answer this question, the author has read relevant literatures, and referred to the senior apartment project, and studied the current conditions around the site, thus obtaining the design plan.
