Within the field of urban planning, stormwater management has become an increasingly more relevant and important theme. The causal relationship has to do with climate change, urbanization, densification, and outdated drainage systems. Climate changes in Norway will mostly result in a hotter and wetter climate with more frequent and extreme weather. Also, an increasing amount of the population chooses to live in urban environment resulting in inevitable processes like urbanization and densification. These processes often lead to a bigger share of dense and impermeable surfaces resulting in larger amounts of runoff water. The denser the city, the more storm water the pipe- and drainage systems will need to handle. Stormwater management in urban areas is a complex challenge with several intricate factors. However, the solution may be simpler and less technical than it seems by managing stormwater locally and exploiting abilities in natural materials and elements. In order to increase my knowledge of how local stormwater management function in reality I chose to include a case study of an ongoing development project at Mindemyren in Bergen. During of the process of analysing the area current plans have been studied in order to understand how they relate to each other. The plans have also been studied with regards to how they relate to the implementation of practical stormwater management measures in the development project at Mindemyren.
