Sammendrag
In today’s modern construction industry, there is an ever-increasing need for tools that can im-prove efficiency and ensure quality in both planning, design and implementation.
Within the construction industry, the open file format IFC has been using for a long time toexchange information between different software tools. However, it has been shown that IFC hasnot been sufficient for transport projects. In 2023, the new version IFC 4.3 was released, whichis more adapted to infrastructure.
With this as a basis, the task is to give the reader a better understanding, and hopefully give newinsight and knowledge about open formats. In addition to investigating whether open formatscan be useful in transport projects, the formats IFC and GML are assessed in this context. Anattempt has also been made to compare these.
In this thesis, it has been chosen to use semi-structured interviews as the preferred method fordata collection, relevant theory around the topic has also been reviewed.
The results show that there is clear agreement among the interview participants regarding theadvantage of using open formats. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, standardization and open-ness are important factors for success in the use of open formats. It also became clear that bothIFC and GML can make a positive contribution to the transport industry. It is clear that thedifferent backgrounds of the formats have led to major structural differences. It was also clearthat further research aimed at combining these two formats would benefit large infrastructureprojects.
