Sammendrag

Bakgrunn Amyotrofisk lateralsklerose forkortet til ALS, er en fatal nevrodegenerativ sykdom som rammer ca. 400 personer i Norge. Sykdommen gir en økende påvirkning på pasientens fysiske, psykiske og sosiale liv, og pasienter med ALS vil oppleve redusert livskvalitet. Sykepleieren har en viktig rolle for å fremme mestring og forbedre livskvalitet hos ALS-pasientene.

Hensikt Hensikten med denne oppgaven er å belyse hva sykepleiere kan gjøre for å forbedre livskvaliteten til pasienter med ALS på sykehuset.

Metode Litteraturoversikt er brukt som metode i oppgaven, hvor 6 forskningsartikler ble analysert. Resultatene fra de artiklene ble brukt for å besvare problemstillingen med støtte fra ulike kilder og ressurser innenfor helseomsorgen, samt egne refleksjoner og erfaring.

Resultater Sykepleiernes kunnskap og erfaring er kritisk for å opprettholde livskvaliteten til ALS-pasienter. Derfor, er det nødvending med kontinuerlig opplæring og styrking av sykepleierens rolle i det tverrfaglige teamet. Sykepleierens bidrag til håndtering av pustevansker, utmattelse og angst, er essensielt for å forbedre pasientenes livskvalitet. Det ble fastslått at kunnskap om respirasjonsstøtte som BiPAP og hostemaskin er avgjørende ved pustevansker. I tillegg, er anerkjennelse av pasientens følelser, vurdering av deres tilstand og styring av deres aktivitets- og hvilemønster, er nøkkelfaktorer ved utmattelse. Til slutt, ble det belyst at effektiv angsthåndtering involverer tilpasning av informasjon og bruk av kommunikasjonsteknikker, og at ressursmangel og tidspress kan hindre optimal forbedring av livskvaliteten, noe som understreker behovet for tilstrekkelig bemanning og ressurser.

Abstract

Background Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, abbreviated to ALS, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects approx. 400 people in Norway. The disease has an increasing impact on the patient's physical, mental and social life, and patients with ALS will experience reduced quality of life. The nurse has an important role in promoting coping and improving the quality of life for ALS patients.

Purpose The purpose of this work is to shed light on what nurses can do to improve the quality of life of patients with ALS in the hospital.

Method A literature review is used as a method in the thesis, where 6 research articles were analysed. The results from those articles were used to answer the problem with support from various resources within healthcare, as well as own reflections and experience.

Results The nurses' knowledge and experience are critical to maintaining the quality of life of ALS patients. Therefore, there is a need for continuous training and strengthening of the nurse's role in the multidisciplinary team. The nurse's contribution to managing breathing difficulties, fatigue and anxiety is essential to improving the patients' quality of life. It was determined that knowledge of respiratory support such as BiPAP and a cough machine is crucial in case of breathing difficulties. In addition, recognizing the patient's feelings, assessing their condition and managing their activity and rest patterns are key factors in fatigue. Finally, it was highlighted that effective anxiety management involves adaptation of information and the use of communication techniques, and that lack of resources and time pressure can prevent optimal improvement of the quality of life, which emphasizes the need for adequate staffing and resources.
