Sammendrag
Background: Previous research proves presenteeism to be a threat to patient safety. Health care professionals working in emergency care settings are more likely to turn up to work unwell. Out-of-hours emergency primary care facilities are high-tempo, unpredictable working environments and vigilance is an essential state of mind for nurses. Presenteeism in an out-of-hours emergency primary care setting is under -investigated. Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore nurses experience with presenteeism and how they find going to work in less than good health effects patient safety in treating acute ill and injured patients. Method: An explorative qualitative design was applied, and semi-structured interviews were conducted on ten registered nurses from three out-of-hours emergency primary care facilities in Norway. The data was analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: Four major themes emerged related to nurse’s experience with presenteeism. These included work ethics, work environment factors, consequences on quality of care and patient safety, and coping behavior. Conclusion: Nurses in out-of-hours emergency primary care facilities experience coming to work in less-than-optimal health. Work ethics and stressful work environments contribute to presenteeism. The nurses acknowledge the risks to patient safety but show evidence of adaptation. The impact presenteeism has on patient safety is, however, still unclear.
