Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to explore women's experience of accompany service employed by midwife, and the long journey to the nearest birth institution. Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. A total of 9 women giving birth for the first time from all parts of Norway were interviewed in November 2023. Systematic text condensation was used as the analysis method. Results: The analysis resulted in three main themes. Access to midwifery skills was described as necessary and reassuring for the women. The midwife's availability and presence for the woman on call and in the ambulance was of great importance to the women when they expressed concern about unforeseen situations for mother and child. The ambulance ride was intense and uncomfortable, but the women were satisfied to get an ambulance. The service was described as good, but vulnerable. It was no guarantee that a midwife would be available, and the ambulance service was vournable, Conclusions: The midwife`s availability, presence and knowledge was crucial for the women. The service was however vulnerable, and it may look like there is a need for improvements, and further research.
