Språkbarrierer i kontrollsituasjoner: En tematisk analyse

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker følgende forskningsspørsmål: Hvordan gjennomføres en kontroll der kommunikasjonen mellom en toller og et kontrollobjekt påvirkes av en språkbarriere, i konteksten av en internasjonal flyplass? Fenomenet er lite dokumentert i konteksten av grensekontroll, og studien kan derfor benyttes som et utgangspunkt for videre forskning. Studien har en pragmatisk tilnærming, og rammen for oppgaven er et beskrivende, intensivt undersøkelsesdesign, i form av en casestudie. Det er samlet inn ikke-inngripende, hovedsakelig kvalitativ, sekundærdata gjennom observasjon av kontrollsituasjoner fra TV-serien Toll.

Dataen ble analysert i en tematisk analyse, og resulterte i fire temaer: språkbarriere, verbal kommunikasjon, nonverbal kommunikasjon, og konflikthåndtering. Resultatene fra studien viser at tolk ikke blir benyttet, selv der behovet er stort. Videre antyder funnene at det meningsforsterkende kroppsspråket til tolleren er viktig for gjennomførelsen av kontrollen. Kontrollsituasjonene er påvirket av et asymmetrisk forhold, og resultatene impliserer at tolleren gjør kommunikasjonen mer likeverdig ved å benytte dialog, høflighet og humor.

This thesis examines the following research question: How is a control conducted where the communication between a customs officer and a control object is affected by a language barrier, in the context of an international airport? The phenomenon is poorly documented in the context of border control, and the study can therefore be used as a starting point for further research. The study has a pragmatic approach, and the framework is a descriptive, intensive research design, in the form of a case study. Non-intrusive, mainly qualitative, secondary data has been collected through observation of control situations from the TV-series Toll.

The data was analyzed in a thematic analysis, and resulted in four themes: language barrier, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, and conflict management. The results of the study show that interpreters are not used, even where the need is great. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the meaning-enhancing body language of the customs officer is important for the execution of the control. The control situations are affected by an asymmetric relationship, and the results imply that the customs officer makes communication more equal by using dialogue, politeness and humor.
