Normal fødsel; et jordmorstudent-perspektiv

Abstract

Tittel: Normal fødsel; et jordmorstudent-perspektiv Hensikt: Hensikten med denne studien er å utforske jordmorstudenters syn og erfaringer med normal fødsel, hvordan de definerer dette og hvordan de opplever at normal fødsel blir ivaretatt i praksis. Problemstilling: Hva er jordmorstudenters forståelse av og erfaring med normal fødsel, og hvordan opplever de normal fødsel blir ivaretatt i praksis? Metode: Denne studien baserer seg på en kvalitativ forskningsmetode med intervju som datainnsamling. Det ble gjennomført intervjuer med ni jordmorstudenter fra fem av seks utdanningsinstitusjoner i Norge som tilbyr en master i jordmorfag. Resultat: Resultatene i vår studie presenteres i tre kodegrupper: 1. Normal fødsel, 2. Avdelingskultur og holdninger og 3. Sårbar student. Vi fant at normal fødsel var utfordrende å definere og at hva studentene anså som normalt både var varierende og endret seg underveis i utdanningen. Noe som påvirket ivaretakelsen av normal fødsel handlet mye om tid, bemanning og kultur på arbeidsplassen. Overgangen fra teori til praksis var overveldende for studentene, da virkeligheten ikke samsvarte med forventningene. Betydningen av relasjonen til veileder, veileders evne til å veilede og inkludering i miljøet var avgjørende for studentenes læringsutbytte. Konklusjon: Vi identifiserte bekymringer knyttet til mangel på klinisk erfaring med normale fødsler da jordmorstudenter hovedsakelig er i praksis på høyrisikoenheter. Det er også behov for å optimalisere læringsutbyttet og forberede studentene på å håndtere normal fødsel på en selvstendig og trygg måte i fremtiden. Studien vår understreker behovet for klarere terminologi, bedre jordmorutdanning og støtte for å sikre at fødselsomsorgen forblir i tråd med prinsippene om å fremme kvinners helse og velvære.

Title: Normal Birth; a Midwifery Student Perspective Aim: The aim of this study is to explore midwifery students' views and experiences of normal birth, how they define it, and how they perceive being met in practice regarding the maintenance of normality in the birthing process. Problem Statement: What are midwifery students understanding and experience with normal birth, and how do they perceive that normal birth is maintained in practice? Method: This study is based on a qualitative research method using interviews as data collection. Interviews were conducted with nine midwifery students from five out of six educational institutions in Norway offering a master's degree in midwifery. Results: The results of our study are presented in three main categories: 1. Normal Birth, 2. Departmental Culture and Attitudes, and 3. Vulnerable Student. We found that defining normal birth was challenging and that students' perceptions of what constitutes normal varied and changed during their studies. Factors affecting the management of normal birth included time, staffing, and workplace culture. The transition from theory to practice was overwhelming for students as reality did not match expectations. The significance of the relationship with the supervisor, the supervisor's ability to guide, and inclusion in the environment were crucial for students' learning outcomes. Conclusion: We uncovered challenges in defining normal birth and the need for clearer terminology. We identified concerns related to a lack of clinical experience with normal births, as midwifery students are mainly in practice on high-risk units. Our findings pointed to the importance of experience, past events, and relationships in shaping midwifery practice and perception of normal birth, as well as the importance of a safe learning environment and good guidance for students' development. This underscores the need to optimize learning outcomes and prepare students to handle normal birth independently and safely.
