dc.description.abstract | Abstract
Background: The development of mobile phone technology has been fast, from the basic mobile phone 30 years ago to the smart mobile phones we use today. The healthcare sector is keeping pace with its growth by integrating mobile phones into their daily clinical work. However, there are benefits and drawbacks to its use.
Aim: This study aimed to determine how research describes the safe use of mobile phones in the operating room.
Methods: The scoping review method was utilized in this study since the subject is quite broad and there is little research done on this matter. The search for relevant articles was conducted using two databases: CINAHL and Medline. In total, fifteen studies were included.
Results: Using mobile phones in the operating room can divert the surgical team ́s attention, raise the risk of post-operative infection, and pose a risk of violating the patient ́s privacy. Some measures are available to minimize these negative effects.
Conclusion: To reduce the above mentioned risks, use of personal mobile phones should be prohibited inside the operating room and the surgical team is encouraged to disinfect their hands and mobile phones routinely. Nevertheless, the study we conducted revealed that there are only a few guidelines or regulations established regarding the safe use of mobile phones in the operating room. Therefore, more research on this topic is required. It is evident, however, that operating room nurses have an essential function in resolving this predicament by identifying factors that can affect the patient ́s safety and the quality of care in the operating room. | |
