About one quarter of global energy use is for production of materials. The more efficient we are in the use of these materials, the better it is for the long-term reduction of CO2 and other GHG emissions. Concrete is the most important building material in the world. An analysis of the environmental profiles of concrete, steel and wood are compared, and some measures to meet long-term requirements have been carried out. CO2 emissions related to concrete, wood and steel are analyzed. A simple warehouse constructed inside a grocery store is used to calculate emissions related to the entire life cycle of the building. The results show that a building made of wood is least harmful to the environment in terms of CO2 emissions from the production of materials. This is based on the building which is constructed for this thesis.
