dc.description.abstract | The adverse effects of global shipping on the environment has been receiving increased
attention. And the realisation has been made that the maritime shipping industry will have to
change in order to meet global climate goals. These goals have however proven themselves
challenging for many shipping companies and the way in which the industry is expected to
change remains uncertain.
This thesis has, therefore, thru an exploratory study sought to highlight levels of
uncertainty within the shipping industry which are currently prevailing as barriers to reaching
its sustainability goals. Based on the uncertainties highlighted the work has proposed conditions
which are believed to be critical for the industry to be successful in reaching these goals. For
this purpose, the researcher has conducted both a cross sectional analysis of secondary data and
case reviews of three of the top ten largest shipping companies in the world, A.P Moeller
Maersk, Hapag-Lioyd and HMM. The work has highlighted a lack of unification among
regulators, a lack of commitment to technical development, lack of adherence to good ship
breaking practices and an educational gap as areas of uncertainty. Based on this the results show
that increasing intergovernmental cooperation, unifying technical development of shipping
innovation, incentivising shipowner to recycle sustainably while retaining the monetary value
it represents and improving workers` rights and education are conditions that will have to be
met for the industry to be successful. Incorporating these conditions is believed to provide the
alignment of interest between stakeholders the industry needs to be successful in this transition.
