AbstractBackgroundIn recent years, there has been an increased focus on suicide and suicide prevention inNorway. National guidelines and action plans provide guidelines for working withyoung people with chronic suicidality and self-harm. Dialectical behavior therapy is aneffective method of treating this group.PurposeThis study sought further knowledge about what guided therapists in dialecticalbehavior therapy in the choice between giving responsibility and taking responsibility,in the treatment of adolescents with chronic suicidality and self-harm.MethodThis was a qualitative research project and the information was obtained by semistructuredinterviews of four DBT therapists. The analysis method chosen wasSystematic Text Condensation.ResultThe analysis gave three result categories: support and resistance, relational factors andConclusionThe study showed that the interviewed therapists in dialectical behavior therapy foryoung people were influenced by various factors in the choice between giving andtaking responsibility. One factor was the method itself another was collaboration andhidden interpersonal mechanisms such as transference and countertransference. Otherfactors was about therapist`s view of people and how understanding the responsibilitycan affect the treatment. Knowing what one cannot be responsible for also became afactor of influence. It is agreed that when responsibility is used with care it canstrengthen the youth`s independence and control in one own lives.Self-harm and suicidal behavior result in high personnel and socio-economic costs. Itcan therefore be profitable to facilitate increased and correct use of responsibility in thetreatment of chronic and self-harming young people.
