Summary This thesis is part of a concept development for a seawater hydraulics pump unit, intended for a new generation of Subsea Remote Operated Vehicles ROVs in development by Oceaneering. This includes evaluating the current solutions, using existing product development strategies and tools to create a concept for a seawater hydraulic pump unit which includes the pump itself, the electric motor, frame/housing and the hydraulic control system. A structured concept development strategy based on the V-model has been utilized to find appropriate external parts and to ensure that costume designs are according to specifications. Through the concept development process, it has been established that a seawater hydraulics pump unit is feasible. Most parts needed to make a seawater hydraulics pump units can either be purchased, made by Oceaneering or their local manufacturers. The pump (Janus P15) can be purchased by a UK based company called Water Hydraulics Co. Frameless electric motors that can be optimized for this project from Kollmorgen and the corresponding motor casing and pump mount can be made by Oceaneering or their local manufacturers. An efficient hydraulic control method has been proposed and a drive for the electric motor has been suggested. There are some additional features on the motor casing that would make the pump unit more practical for its intended use like steel insets in grinning connections and built-in oil compensator. There is also a need for verification on most of the requirements before prototyping can take place.
