dc.description.abstractExtended Reality (XR) is a promising disruptive technology that has significant implications for the digital transformation in industrial sectors. The term “Extended Reality” is an umbrella term for existing immersive technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR). The purpose of conducting this study is to map out the potential use of XR in the energy and oil industry. This thesis explores the current state of XR with a blend of literature review and online research, and that forms the basis to investigate the possible uses of XR in the energy and oil industry. To answer this main question, observational techniques enriched by industrial insights from Moreld Apply have been followed and preceded by an interviewing step to extract current struggles in the business. Findings from research work demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of XR adoption in the energy and oil industry, for instance, the development capabilities in XR such as Azure Spatial Anchors (ASA) make it possible to develop XR solutions to be easily used for operational practices in the industry. The thesis provides a generic overview of several use cases which encourages further and deeper research on specific cases.
