dc.description.abstract
Topology optimization has become an important design approach for complex and lightweight applications. Additive manufacturing is an advanced manufacturing technique which fabricates products by bonding material in a layer-by-layer fashion and is considered to be the method of choice for manufacturing intricate shapes. There are many different additive manufacturing methods but in producing metal components the powder bed fusion process is dominating the market. By combining topology optimization and additive manufacturing, highly efficient and complex designs can be realized which previously was unattainable using traditional manufacturing methods. A housing design provided by Archer Oiltools was topology optimized for additive manufacturing. Three light-weighting operations were conducted on the optimized design by replacing the inner solid volume with distinct types of lattice structures. The solid and lattice infilled designs were analyzed and compared to both each other and the original design. The results show that approximately 70% weight reduction was achieved while remaining below the von Mises yield criterion.
