Abstract

After giving a short historical survey of the methods development in Norway and especially the combination of archaeological and natural (pollen and macrofossil analysis) methods departing form the excavations at Forsand in Rogaland, it is argued that it is great need to improve the following four topics: 1. Due to the need for an immediate better general view of the results from the many excavations, it is argued in favour of a website with short information from each excavation. 2. It is necessary within short time to initiate research on the fast growing house and settlement material. 3. The new recognition that settlement sites with remains of houses are very numerous in all parts of the country must result in a new practise when dealing with cases of exemption from the Cultural Heritage Act. 4. In order to get the best possible knowledge from this type of excavation all such project must have natural research (at least pollen and macrofossil analysis) as an integrated part, both in planning and exercise.
