Abstract
Bucket-shaped vessels, with a main distribution in southern and western Norway, developed

and disappeared during the Migration Period (5th and 6th century AD). The vessels occur in

almost every grave during this period as well as in residential contexts. This study supersedes

Håkon Shetelig’s (1905a) and Johs. Bøe’s (1931a) studies concerning the typological development

of the bucket-shaped vessels, which is of central importance to the chronological phasing

of the period.
