This article deals with place names from Hauge and Tu in Klepp (Jæren), referring to central functions in the Iron Age, e.g. pre- Christian religion, old judicial system and defence, political power and communication. It is discussed whether the place name environment from this location indicates centrality and the habitation site of an elite. Parallels from other central places in Jæren are presented, e.g. from Bø in Hå, Lye in Time and Hove/Høyland in Sandnes. Some methodological challenges when using place names as sources about cultural history are discussed.nb_NO
