dc.description.abstract
In this thesis we have researched the perceived social experience of students at UiS under the Covid-19 pandemic. We also deliberately looked at two different studies, engineering and health science studies respectively. The empirical data we collected were acquired through 6 qualitative interviews, with 3 from each faculty. In these semi-structured interviews we got a close look on their personal experiences during Covid-19. Through our theoretical framework we analyzed the empirical data and tried to the best of our ability to answer our hypothesis and the problem for the thesis. With the scope of our study it was not feasible to generalize to other universities or abstract to any high degree with accuracy. Despite this, our findings suggest that there were no substantial differences between our two study groups in terms of their ability to cope with Covid-19 as students socially. The differences we observed were at best individual differences. What we did concretely see was that each of our interviewees had an ability to adapt to a changing, restricted and often times difficult social situation. We mainly applied Goffman’s theory of the presentation of self in everyday life in conjunction with Granovetter’s theory about strong and weak ties, this enabled us to get a comprehensive framework through which we could see and interpret our empirical data.
