It is becoming more and more common to build school buildings using Cross-laminated timber as a building material. It is a sustainable material that functions as a stable building component that can be used for both walls, roofs and ceilings. Building with wood also contributes to a good indoor environment and good conditions for learning. Although interest in construction with CLT is rising, it is still a relatively new material where there is a lack of standardized solutions as there is for concrete and steel.
In this thesis, a proposal for a standardized building concept for school buildings using CLT will be presented. This is done by looking at how school buildings are built today by comparing two ongoing projects and then highlighting the solutions that are seen as favorable to the economic point of view and other requirements that must be met. Particular emphasis is placed on the requirements for sound and fire, as these are requirements that are often highlighted as challenging.
In the thesis, it has been done a case study where two school buildings built with CLT, Bamble and Kongsberg VGS, have been examined. To find a proposal for a possible construction concept, literature study and document analysis have been utilized. Literature study has been used to gain knowledge about CLT as a building material and to be able to argue for advantageous solutions. The document analysis has been done to be able to delve into how school buildings are built in CLT today and what role the elements have in the structure of the building, as well as financial and fire- and soundtechnical choices.
