In today’s society, social media is part of nearly everyone’s daily life. The photo-sharing service Instagram is one of the biggest platforms that we have, and what we choose to post on there might affect the impression we give the people that we meet. The purpose of this study is to see how individuals wish to come across on Instagram and set it up against how Norwegian influencers present themselves. The project bases itself on Erving Goffman’s interaction theory about dramaturgical presentation of self and writings about identity and social media. The research question is: How can we transfer ideas about identity and Erving Goffman’s theory of dramaturgical self-presentation to the use of the photo-sharing service Instagram? To answer the research question, I have utilized qualitative methods such as interviews and basic text analysis. I conducted three interviews with young people who use Instagram on a daily basis, and I analysed the Instagram profiles of three Norwegian influencers. Through the interviews, we get an idea about what attitudes the informants have on their own and other people’s self-presentation on Instagram and to what degree this applies to the non-virtual reality. The findings indicate that the informants are concerned with them coming across the way they themselves wish. That they seem like people who got it all figured out, that they are funny and that they take pictures that look good, and so on. These are all things that can give an impression of what kind of person they are. Both "private individuals" and influencers alike put in work in their Instagram profiles so that they might achieve this
