A number of toponyms ending in -stad or -land in south-western Norway are linked to deserted farms from prehistoric times. Several of these names are identical to and seem to be of the same type and age as ancient Norwegian farm names with these two final elements. Names ending in -land are discussed in an article in Namn och bygd 108 (Særheim 2020). This article deals with names in -stad. Such names have most likely been passed on through the centuries in the local language as a result of the farmland having been used up to the present day by a neighbouring farm. The names thus seem to reflect and throw light on prehistoric naming of farms and settlements in this area.
