Resultatene i oppgaven blir funnet gjennom intervjuene. In this paper, we aim to answer the research question: "How do factors in the work environment affect employees' autonomy, competence, and sense of belonging, and how does this affect their motivation?" The main theory used in this paper is self-determination theory, a macro theory of human motivation developed by Edward Deci & Richard Ryan. The theoretical part of the paper will cover important concepts in self-determination theory such as autonomy, competence, and sense of belonging. Additionally, the chapter will discuss controlling and autonomous motivation. To examine what influences motivation, we will look at intrinsic and extrinsic motivation through two sub-theories of the main theory, namely "Cognitive Evaluation Theory" and "Organismic Integration Theory."
The methodological part of the paper will explain how we investigated the research question. We conducted qualitative interviews to examine the issue. This chapter will describe how the interviews were conducted and their content. The sample of interviewees consists of four employees in a warehouse store, a bar, and a grocery store. The chapter will conclude with an assessment of reliability and validity.
The results in the paper are found through the interviews. All 11 interviews are reviewed, and the most important findings are extracted. The interview findings are presented systematically, with each workplace separated into parts. The interviewees are kept anonymous but introduced with numbers explained in the text.
In the discussion part of the paper, we analyze the interview responses using self-determination theory and its sub-theories and compare them to our research questions. The conclusion of this study shows that what motivates individuals varies from person to person, and that psychological needs influence motivation and well-being. This study reveals that recognition and appreciation are factors that have a significant impact on employees' motivation. Additionally, it is important to note that the findings cannot be generalized to all employees in the workplaces since we conducted a limited number of interviews.
