This study examines the relationship between the metrics produced by the datafication focus at the Amedia group and the ability of Gjesdalbuens journalists to remain autonomous actors performing their democratic mission. How do they balance producing what their audience wants, as opposed to what they need, especially when modern datafication tools provide them with precise insights and data for every article they produce? The study uses the research question "How does Amedias datafication prioritisation impact how Gjesdalbuens journalists work?" Asking three of the newspapers four full time journalists in qualitative interviews how they perceive their use of datafication and metrics, and its impact on how they go about their work identified several key findings. Firstly there is a contrast between the journalists' perception of autonomy and the actual impact of datafication on their work. Secondly, The journalists recognized the hypothetical influence of datafication on their autonomy and capability to execute their democratic mission, but contended that their primary focus remained on the democratic responsibility of their profession. The study concludes that datafication does indeed affect how Gjesdalbuens journalists perform their job, what makes it fascinating is the extent to which it does so. An extent that this study aims to inspire further research on.
