The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between leadership style, gender, mindset, and job satisfaction in a Norwegian energy company. There is, to our knowledge conducted limited research on these factors in a male-dominated industry in Norway. Our thesis seeks to fill this gap. Existing empirical literature on the subject shows that female leaders in the workplace experience prejudice based on their gender, and that male leaders might overall be more preferred as leaders. Our study has a quantitative approach towards our problem statement, and we use a data set that was collected in 2021 by Haeckl & Rege (2021) in a Norwegian energy company. Our analysis was conducted on 319 total respondents, whereas 88 were leaders and 231 were employees. Our main findings show that employee’s perception of leaders’ leadership positively correlates with their job satisfaction, and that there is a difference between leaders’ own perception and their employee’s perception of leadership style. Neither leader’s self-reported leadership, gender or mindset was found to influence employee’s job satisfaction. Our findings imply that female leaders in the Norwegian energy sector might not subject to gender stereotyping, and that female and male leaders are perceived as equally capable of leading by their employees.
