Abstract

Borderline personality disorder includes symptoms such as dysfunctional relationships as well as other symptoms that affect relationships. This can further affect one's social network, in addition to increased loneliness. The aim of this study was to look at the symptoms of borderline personality disorder and their effect on the communication pattern in romantic relationships. The research question for this bachelor's thesis is: what influence do the symptoms of borderline personality disorder have on the communication pattern in romantic relationships? To answer the research question, a systematic overview was used. The systematic review was done through Web of Science, APA PsycNet and PubMed with the following keywords: BPD, couples, interaction, communication and romantic relations. Criteria such as the research have a maximum age of 10 years, the availability of the text, that the research can be found on qualified search engines, peer-reviewed articles and that the articles are written in English. In total, there were 6 articles that met the criteria for the research. The result was that in couples where one person has the diagnosis borderline, a hostile communication pattern was shown compared to control groups. In addition, couples own experience reported in the qualitative analysis can be linked to the same finding of increased hostility in the communication pattern in couples where one person has the diagnosis borderline. This was also found in research that used a literature review as a method. It was also shown to be more ineffective communication, negative communication during problem solving and social support and more dominance in the communication pattern in couples where one has the diagnosis borderline. Limitations that may arise in the study include the choice of language, the choice of research, time and resources.
