«En, to, tre, fire, fem, fire, tre, to, en»: En diskursanalyse av "individet" i debatten om psykisk helse

Abstract

Konsepter som individualisme, autonomi og frihet er sentrale i moderne psykologi og dens antatt verdinøytrale mål. Dog er de samme konseptene uløselig knyttet til politiske konstruksjoner, især nyliberalisme og dens fremvekst i etterkrigstidens vestlige verden. En omfattende forskningslitteratur peker på hvordan maktsystemer approprierer psykologiens teknologier for å nå sine ideologiske mål. Et hovedmoment i dette fenomenet er etableringen av et kulturelt hegemoni over konseptet om selvet, og utviklingen av en individualistisk etos. Denne teksten søker å belyse denne prosessen, dens historisitet og implikasjoner ved en foucauldiansk diskursanalyse av en kontemporær norsk offentlig debatt om mental helse – hvis funn tyder på en hegemonisk individualistisk diskurs. Concepts like individualism, autonomy and freedom are central to modern psychology and its supposedly value-free goals. Yet these same concepts are intrinsically linked to political constructions, particularly neoliberalism and its rise in the post-war Western world. A vast body of scientific literature points to how systems of power appropriate the technologies of psychology as a means to their ideological ends. Key to this phenomenon is the establishment of a cultural hegemony over the concept of the self, and the development of an individualistic ethos. This text seeks to shed light on this process, its historicity and implications by way of a Foucauldian discourse analysis of a contemporary Norwegian public debate on mental health – of which the findings suggest a hegemonic discourse of individualism.
