Summary In this bachelor thesis, we have dived into the world of TikTok, and its popular feature called stitching. Stitching is an editing feature that allows users to clip and integrate 5 seconds of another video to use in their own (TikTok newsroom, 2020). We have studied three research questions: Does the stitching feature contribute to the virality or success of videos? Can stitching help debunk misinformation? And is the stitching feature benefitting how users and micro-celebrities create and share content on the platform? These research questions are interesting to us because our lives are influenced by social media. Our method was to do a digital observation study, studying literature on network society and different literature related to social media and misinformation. We compared theory and examples of videos from our TikTok data collection to answer our research questions. Our findings support that the stitching feature contribute to the virality or success of videos, especially when we compare how often stitched videos are shared, liked or saved. We found examples showing that videos made by micro-celebrities, sometimes help debunking misinformation. We learned how trends done through video stitching can contribute to how users and micro-celebrities share content on the platform. However, by using the stitching feature your opinions and reactions can get noticed by millions of other people, and as such you do not have to be a micro-celebrity to express yourself through the new phenomenon TikTok stitching.
