Afroamerikanske idrettsutøveres kamp for likhet og menneskerettigheter: En analyse av reaksjoner siden 1947 til 2021.

Abstract

Emnet jeg har valgt er hvordan mennesker sine holdninger til afroamerikanske idrettsutøvere og spesifikke hendelser har endret seg fra 1947 til 2021. Innenfor emnet undersøker jeg hvordan ulike folkegrupper reagerer til hendelser, og hvordan medier omtaler de ulike situasjonene og personene som er involvert. Derfor er avisartikler grunnlaget for majoriteten av min empiri.

Oppgavens problemstilling er: “Hvordan har forholdet mellom idrett og politikk i det amerikanske samfunnet endret seg gjennom årene?” Jeg skal se på om holdninger ovenfor afroamerikanske idrettsutøvere er basert på et spørsmål om makt. Kan idrettshistorie være noe rent og eget, eller er en kombinasjon av idrett, politikk eller økonomi uunngåelig?

For å kunne gjøre en grundig undersøkelse av problemstillingen har jeg dratt inspirasjon fra tre forskere: Damion Thomas, Allison Lincoln og Robin Kelley. Thomas snakker om amerikanske myndigheter sin manipulering av idrett under den kalde krigen i boka Globetrotting (Sport and Society), Lincoln fokuserer i stor grad på globalisering med idrett som redskap i boka The Global Politics of Sports, og Kelley argumenterer for at sport kan benyttes som en løsning på sosiale konflikter i boka The Role of the International Sports Boycott in South Africa.

Kildematerialet bidrar til å se tendenser til et usunt maktforhold i samfunnet, hvor idrettsutøverne utfordrer maktinnehaverne, og hvilke holdninger som finnes til spesifikke hendelser. Man kan se en utvikling, og man kan se at utfordringer til disse forventningene og tradisjonene fortsatt kan høste blandede reaksjoner og mottakelser.

I et historisk perspektiv bidrar oppgaven til å utforske idrett og afroamerikanske utøveres rolle i det amerikanske samfunnet, særlig i tråd med kampen for sivilrettigheter i USA. Jeg anser oppgaven som svært relevant på grunn av rollen Black Lives Matter har fått i samfunnet de siste årene, og på grunn av idrettens bruk av historie for å bidra til forandringer i samfunnet.

This thesis is an analysis of how people's attitudes towards Afro-American athletes and specific incidents has changed since 1947 to 2021. It investigates how diverse groups of people react to incidents, and how the media speaks of the different situations and the people who are involved. That´s why the foundation of most of my empiric are newspapers.

This thesis´ research question is: “How has the relationship between sports and politics in the American society changed throughout the years? Are attitudes towards Afro-American athletes based on questions of power? Can history of sports be something own and pure, or is a combination of sports, politics or religion unavoidable?”

To be able to do a thorough investigation of my research question, this thesis is inspired by three different people: Damion Thomas, Allison Lincoln, and Robin Kelley. Thomas speaks about American governments´ manipulation of sports during the Cold War. Lincoln focuses on globalization with sports as a tool, and Kelley argues that sports can be used as a solution to social conflicts.

The sources contribute to see tendences to uncover an unhealthy relationship based on power in society, where the athletes challenge those who have power, and reactions to specific incidents. We can see a development, but you can still see challenges towards these traditions and expectations getting mixed reactions and receptions.

In a historical perspective this thesis contributes with an investigation of sports and AfroAmerican athletes and their role in the American society, especially compared with the fight for civil rights in USA. I consider the thesis as highly relevant because of the role Black Lives Matter has gained in the society the last years in a global perspective, and because of how sports use history to contribute to changes in the society.
