This bachelor thesis comes as a result of three years at the University of Stavanger, Norwegian Hotel School. The candidates have chosen to put the spotlight on loyalty programs and will therefore answer a thesis that looks at whether loyalty programs create loyalty in the hotel industry. The introduction to the thesis presents both the problem and the research question. This part also conveys a bit of the history of the modern loyalty programs, as well as what a loyalty program actually is. Justifications are also presented for the choice of thesis and research questions, as well as limitations that the thesis has. The theory part of the thesis presents our definition of a successful loyalty program, what loyalty is, how guests choose hotels, the role of loyalty program in the hotel industry, and lastly how loyalty programs are used as a marketing strategy. The thesis is structured as a literary analysis, which means that previous research will be analysed in order to finally be able to draw a conclusion. A total of nine articles were found and remained to be used for the analysis. These articles were about either the hotel industry or the aviation industry. The findings of the analysis mostly dealt with loyalty programs and competitors, guests perceived value of the loyalty programs, partners, loyalty program as a customer loyalty strategy, as well as some general findings that are not categorized. It’s these findings that have been linked to the thesis in order to create a rich and balanced discussion. Our views in the discussion chapter are the basis for the conclusions that have been drawn for both the thesis and research questions. The findings indicated that loyalty programs create a loyal customer base in the hotel industry if they are well executed and that the guests considers the program valuable. Research question 1 showed that rewards that had an affectionate effect on the guests, resulted in the best effect for the loyalty programs.Research question 2 suggested that loyalty programs will only work if the programs are well developed, and in some cases that they need partners organisations so the best possible value can be offered to the guests.
