«History’s About To Be Overthrown»: En analyse av Six: The Musical og dens mottakelse

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven er en diskurs- og multimodalanalyse av den komiske historiemusikalen Six (2017). Hovedfokuset ligger på hvordan musikalen formidler historie til et yngre publikum, og hvordan offentligheten har tolket og videreført historiebruket. Jeg finner i analysen at Six har tatt utgangspunkt i dagens populærkultur, slang og samfunnsdebatter, og forteller dermed en gammel historie i en ny drakt for å spre et moderne budskap om feminisme, myndiggjøring og selvstendighet. Spesielt drar musikalen sterkt inspirasjon av store samfunnsfenomen som Hamilton (2015) og #MeToo-kampanjen. Musikalen er et eksempel på både politisk, underholdende og eksistensiell historiebruk. Når det gjelder musikalens offentlige mottakelse så har jeg analysert reaksjoner fra to hold: fra profesjonelle kritikere og fra fans. Kritikere følger musikologen Elissa Harberts mønster om musikkmusikalers mottakelse mens fans demonstrerer kreative og nyskapende måter å tolke og videreføre et historisk medieprodukt. Alt i alt, er Six et eksempel på hvordan fortiden brukes og aktualiseres for å skape interesse for historie og for å stimulere til historisk tenkning.

This master's thesis is a discourse and multimodal analysis of the comical history musical Six (2017). The main focus is how the musical conveys history to a younger audience, and how the public has interpreted and continued its use of history. In the analysis I find that Six takes inspiration from today's popular culture, slang and social debates, and thus tells an old story in a new guise to spread a modern message about feminism, empowerment and independence. In particular, the musical is strongly inspired by major societal phenomena such as Hamilton and the #MeToo campaign. The musical is an example of both political, entertaining, and existential use of history. When it comes to the musical's public reception, I have analyzed reactions from two sides: from professional critics and from fans. Critics follow musicologist Elissa Harbert's pattern of history musicals receptions while fans demonstrate creative and innovative ways to interpret and pass on the musical’s historical aspect. All in all, Six is an example of how the past is used and actualized to create interest in history and to stimulate historical thinking.
