Det materialistiske bilkrasjet: Hvordan objektifiseringen av et samfunnsproblem i The Great Gatsby og The Picture of Dorian Gray falsifiserer holdninger

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker hvordan The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald) og The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wilde) kritiserer samfunnets besettelse av materialistiske verdier. To konsepter hentet fra teorien vil bli brukt for å undersøke dette: «objektifiseringen av et samfunnsproblem» og «falsifiseringen av holdninger». Ved å legge sammen disse konseptene vil jeg vise at ved å bruke et objekt for å representere et samfunnsproblem, i tillegg til å representere karakterene, er Wilde og Fitzgerald i stand til å vise at misvisende holdninger er ansvarlige for samfunnsproblemet. På denne måten er de i stand til å vise hvilken destruktiv kraft materialistiske verdier kan ha på individer og samfunnet som helhet. Jeg vil også vise at for å formidle sin kritikk av materialisme fullt ut, så må Dorian og Gatsby dø, og det må være objektet som representerer både dem og samfunnet som er årsaken til deres død.

This paper investigates how The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wilde) criticize society’s obsession with materialism. Two concepts derived from theory will be used to investigate this: ‘the objectification of a social ill’ and ‘the falsification of beliefs’. By intersecting these concepts, I will show that by using an object to represent a larger social ill, as well as to represent the characters, Wilde and Fitzgerald are able to show that misleading beliefs are to blame for the social ill. In this manner, they are able to show the destructive force materialism can have on individuals and society as a whole. I will also show that to fully convey their criticism of materialism, Dorian and Gatsby have to die, and it has to be the objects that represent both them and society that have to be the cause of their deaths.
